Pilot projects

Apart from the backbone of the Madeira Life platform that provides an environment to build the portal and social network, some pilot projects will be developed that explore and demonstrate the more exciting new features of the platform.
The project initially focuses on prototyping the following modules.

  1. Pilot 1Situated Blogging - Blogging is a popular way to communicate your experiences to your friends, if not to the world. Finding interesting blogs to read, however, is difficult and discouraging people to make use of this medium. Situated blogging is intended to improve this: it allows bloggers to attach their blog to locations and circumstances and it allows readers to look for blog entries associated with locations and their interests.
In Madeira Life, you can tell your friends how you like the movie you just saw; they will be notified of your story when they are queuing at the cinema themselves, or when they are planning their weekend through Madeira Life at home.
  2. Pilot 2Cultural Itineraries - Madeira has a rich and long history, of which many Madeirenses and most tourists are not aware. Telling this history can be done, for example, by using the above-mentioned story-telling approach, but the best way to learn about history is to actively experience it. This module of Madeira Life offers a personalized guide that can be used to travel in time through the city of Funchal, allowing the visitor (tourists and locals alike) to explore the history of their direct surroundings through an interactive map and to visualize the history of architectural heritage in 360° panorama’s and 3D virtual environments. This virtual environment reveals the architectural structure and original construction processes of the most significant religious, civil, and military buildings, showing many scientific and technical aspects as well as the evolution of the urban context from its early times until the present day. Normally inaccessible areas of the monuments can be accessed virtually, either through panoramic photographs or in VR models.
In Madeira Life, you can relive your day: it will plot your itinerary on an interactive map that will give you access to a library of multi-media about the things you’ve seen and experienced, including the photographs you took with your mobile phone. You can even leave a live trail of your activities and photos online, sharing it with your friends at home or at other locations.
  3. Pilot 3Story-Telling - Our society is full of stories, from old people as well as younger ones, that rarely get told. Not because no-one wants to hear them, or because no-one wants to tell them, but simply because story-tellers and audience don’t find each other in the right time and at the right place. Story-telling has a very important social role, bridging gaps between generations, neighbourhoods, social groups and nationalities.
In Madeira Life, people will find it easy to tell their story, in text, video, or audio, and publish it online for anyone to hear. The audience will easily find these stories, as Madeira Life offers them a selection on the basis of interests, location, time available, preferred media, etc. Walking amidst the fishermen’s boats in Câmara de Lobos, you will hear their stories on your iPhone.
  4. Pilot 4Smart Shopping Agent - The Smart Shopping Agent is an instrument that retailers can use to get personalized access to interested clients. This is a very effective way to address customers who have expressed an interest in products and promotions and who are either local or often near the retailer’s business.
From the consumer’s point of view: in Madeira Life, you can easily find promotions and products available at shops near your location. If you allow the platform to log where your mobile phone goes, it can even help you by picking out the shops that you pass on your way to work. You can tell Madeira Life to notify you when a product you are interested in is on sale in the shop you are about to pass!
